Relative to the ancient players of Ramon Allones or Flor de T.Partagas, Vegas Robaina is very much the new kid on the block. The first cigars were made available in Madrid, Spain in 1997 and were given worldwide distribution shortly afterwards. The taste is unmistakeably "old school" tannic Cuban and for this reason the Vegas Robaina brand is becoming popular in Spain amongst those who want a quality robust Cuban cigar at a reasonable price. "Vegas" translates as "fertile plains" or "plantation" whilst Robaina is the family name - hence Vegas Robaina can be literally translated as the "plantations of the family Robaina". The Robaina family have grown tobacco in the Vuelta Abajo region of Cuba for over 150 years. Their fame is near-legendary in Cuba because of the quality of their harvests and the high percentage of their crop that is utilised as the outer wrapper on Havana cigars. After 150 years of producing the finest wrapper for other brands of Havana cigars it was only natural that at some point the Robaina family would be honoured with their very own cigar. Our advice is try a small sampler - the strong tobacco taste is not to everyones liking - but the quality of construction and the potential for long term ageing means that the future price on this cigar is a one way ticket only.
